Engineered hardwood is a versatile flooring option

Engineered hardwood flooring provides the same beautiful and upscale look as solid hardwood flooring. Wood species are many, and textures range from smooth to wire-brushed. Matte, semi-gloss, and high-gloss finishes are available. You can find an assortment of styles to match your decor, whether that decor is rustic, ultra-modern, or somewhere in-between, at The Carpet Store in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We are a locally-owned business that strives to turn first-time customers into repeat customers. We install floors for commercial entities in and around the city, and we complete small and large jobs for residential customers.

Composition

Engineered wood floors show off a top layer of hardwood. Layers of plywood are hidden under this surface layer. It is the plywood base that makes this man-made flooring more versatile than solid hardwood flooring. Each plywood layer is positioned in a different direction, and this makeup keeps the wood from warping and bowing like solid wood when it is wet. Therefore, engineered wood boards can be laid in a bathroom or basement. High-quality brands that have a thick veneer on top can last a lifetime with proper care. Daily sweeping and periodic deep cleaning is ideal. The floor can even be refinished once or twice if it becomes worn.

Installation

Engineered wood is not nailed to a wood subfloor like solid hardwood. Instead, boards are designed to click and lock together so a floating floor can be constructed. Underlayment is used beneath the flooring to correct minor subfloor imperfections, protect the floor, reduce noise, and provide cushioning. Foam, rubber, felt, and cork is popular underlayment materials. The convenient, glueless installation method makes it easy to install engineered hardwood flooring over some existing floors and radiant heat systems. A vapor barrier is installed with the underlayment when the flooring is placed in a basement or other moisture-prone space.
