Engineered wood is not nailed to a wood subfloor like solid hardwood. Instead, boards are designed to click and lock together so a floating floor can be constructed. Underlayment is used beneath the flooring to correct minor subfloor imperfections, protect the floor, reduce noise, and provide cushioning. Foam, rubber, felt, and cork is popular underlayment materials. The convenient, glueless installation method makes it easy to install engineered hardwood flooring over some existing floors and radiant heat systems. A vapor barrier is installed with the underlayment when the flooring is placed in a basement or other moisture-prone space.
